23 Jul Why AI-Generated Artwork Isn’t Print-Ready – And What to Do Instead
In a world where AI is advancing faster than ever, it’s tempting to turn to tools like ChatGPT or image generators for quick artwork. Whether it’s a logo, a flyer background, or a social media post, the appeal is clear: fast, low-cost, and instant.
But when it comes to professional print, AI-generated artwork isn’t up to the job.
Here’s why.
1. Low Resolution = Poor Print Quality
AI-generated images are typically made for digital use – not for print. They often come in at 72 DPI (dots per inch), which is fine for screens, but far below the 300 DPI standard needed for quality printed materials. When scaled up for posters, leaflets, or banners, the image becomes pixelated, blurry, and unprofessional.
2. Lack of Print-Friendly File Types
Most AI image tools export in basic file formats like JPG or PNG, with no access to vector files (e.g. AI, EPS, or SVG). That’s a major problem when it comes to resizing, colour matching, or using artwork across different formats.
Need a logo that works on a business card, website and a roller banner? AI tools won’t cut it.
3. No Bleed, Safe Zones or Crop Marks
Print artwork needs to be set up properly with bleed areas (to avoid white edges when trimmed), safe zones (to protect important content), and crop marks. AI tools don’t consider any of these – which means your finished product might be misaligned, chopped off, or missing key details.
4. Copyright and Consistency Issues
Many AI image generators are trained on a wide pool of content, often without clear rights. That means you could unknowingly be using a design that resembles copyrighted artwork – a risk for any business. AI also struggles with consistent branding, fonts, colours, and layouts across a full set of materials.
